NYPD First Precinct: Chris and I deduced that the First Precinct (now a museum) is what was seen in NY-based movies and telelvision shows, such as NYPD Blue or Hill Street Blues. It seemed awfully familiar to two non-New Yorkers, as if we'd seen it somewhere before. Plus, the old cars sat outside as if they had or could be used as props.
Vietnam Veterans Plaza consists of a light green frosted glass brick wall, etched with the letters of soldiers to friends and family back home. One that stands out in my mind talked about the grass they had to walk through in the jungle, as it would be up to 15 feet high and sharp as a knife blade. He said that alone was worthy of a Purple Heart.
This now knicked and twisted spherical structure is from the World Trade Center site. An eternal flame burns in front.
I loved these colors! I just had to have a picture of it. Passersby must have been wondering why I was posing with an ad not too far from a Portajohn.
WTC Site
This church sits across from Ground Zero. Though debris was flying all over the block on 9/11, not a single pane of glass was broken.
Times Square. Nothing but ads, nationally-recognized stores and crowds. We went there to go to the TKTS booth, where you can get day-of discount tickets for Broadway shows. I wanted to see Rent but it would have been 150 bucksand we wouldn't have been able to go out to dinner. Surprisingly, restaurants do stop seating around 10 on a Monday night in the city that never sleeps.
Daily 'Today Show" watcher Kelly at 30 Rock. We finally get to NY just after Katie's departure. We saw Rockefeller Plaza and the show's summer studio setup outside but that's as close as we came to the show. We had originally planned on waking up early Monday morning and making it to the Plaza in time for Nick Lachey's concert, but of course that didn't happen.
Down in the subway, heading out to dinner on our last night in town. Our destination was Kitchen 22, which we had tried to go to the night before but didn't head out until 10:30 or so and they were no longer seating. (see aforementioned note about restaurant closings) Same story this night. So we checked out other places on the block and settled on Cafe L'Express. A French-themed place with a nice ambiance.
I'm tipsy and happy, ready for dinner--I have no idea that a roach will crawl around on my arm at Cafe L'Express for five seconds before I notice it. Hey, we're in New York! It's just not that big of a deal there. I'm just glad it wasn't a New York Rat.
